Ruminations #3 | Cooling the pressure: science-based strategies for healthier, more productive cattle

May 11, 2026 16:00 Europe/Copenhagen

Heat stress is no longer a seasonal inconvenience — it’s a structural challenge for modern cattle systems. Rising temperatures and humidity compromise feed intake, rumen function, immunity, wellbeing and ultimately milk yield, average weight gain and profitability. Addressing heat stress requires more than cooling strategies alone.

In this third edition of Ruminations, we take a holistic view of heat stress management, connecting cow biology and physiology, rumen health, nutrition, and on-farm practices into one integrated framework.

Join Prof. Cassandra Tucker PhD, one of the world’s leading experts in cattle welfare, for an insightful session on managing heat stress in beef and dairy systems. This webinar will explore how heat stress impacts animal health, behavior, and productivity—and how a holistic, science-based approach combining welfare, nutrition, and management can help producers feed smarter and protect performance under pressure.

Key learning objectives

  • Understand how heat stress affects cattle physiology, behavior, and productivity

  • Apply practical feeding strategies to support intake, rumen function, and resilience

  • Integrate welfare, nutrition, and management practices to mitigate heat stress effectively

Novonesis will donate USD 5 for each live webinar participant, up to a maximum total contribution of USD 3,000, to support the work of Kinder Ground. This donation is made by Novonesis and is not contingent on any purchase or business relationship.

Kinder Ground is a science-based nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of farmed animals through research, education, and collaboration. By working with farmers, veterinarians, companies, and industry groups, Kinder Ground develops practical, evidence-driven approaches that advance animal welfare while supporting sustainable and productive farming systems.

Novonesis is a global leading biosolutions partner leveraging the power of enzymes and microbes to support health, wellbeing and productivity of animals in our care. By combining deep scientific expertise with practical applications, Novonesis helps customers better the world and business with biology.

Who should attend

Dr. Cassandra Tucker PhD

Professor and Director of the Center for Animal Welfare in the Department of Animal Science at UC Davis, Chief Scientific Officer at Kinder Ground

Dr. Cassandra Tucker leads a research team focused on cattle behavior and welfare at UC Davis. She aims to understand the effects of housing and management systems from the animal's perspective. She also works as a consultant to help private, industry, and non-governmental organizations develop animal care standards as well as training and auditing programs. Through these activities, scientific information informs the day-to-day lives of cattle. She teaches courses about domestic animal behavior and animal welfare. Dr. Tucker is the Director of the Center for Animal Welfare and co-founder of the non-profit Kinder Ground, an organization that supports the farming community to improve animal welfare.
